Building Relationships Through Meal Delivery with Chef for Hire
At Chef for Hire, delivering meals is about more than just nutrition—it’s about connection. Each delivery offers a moment of kindness, a listening ear, and often, a meaningful conversation. In this interview, Detra Glasco, one of the dedicated delivery team members, shares what it’s like to work closely with clients and how these daily interactions make a lasting impact.
Interviewer:
So give us a little, like, day in the life of working for Chef for Hire and the clients that you serve.
Detra Glasco:
Okay, so every day is like delivery first. If I have to call them, I’m calling to greet. I say, “Good morning, I’m here with your meals.” I bring the meals in and put them wherever they’d like—on the shelf, on the counter, wherever. Then " You have a good day." Sometimes they talk, a lot of them talk to me.
Interviewer:
Do they?
Detra Glasco:
Yes, they tell me all kinds of stories. Yeah, I say, yeah.
Interviewer:
What kind of stories do they share with you?
Detra Glasco:
So they talk about their past. One client is always telling me he’s been in the Army, the Navy—just all kinds of stuff. One lady told me she used to be a beautician. She always compliments my hair!
Interviewer:
That’s fun.
Detra Glasco:
Yeah, I really do have a personal connection with a lot of them. I greet them by name, too. Some of them always say, “My name is Alicia,” and I’ll say, “It's either Detra or Ms. D?” It makes it easier for them.
Interviewer:
That’s awesome. Can you share maybe a story—during your time with Chef for Hire—where you saw how the service made a real difference in someone’s day?
Detra Glasco:
Yes! So one of our clients, we call her Jane. With her, we have to make contact before we can leave her meals. One day, she didn’t come to the door, so I knocked on her little window. She usually takes her time getting down. She didn’t answer right away, so I had to take the meals back. Later, she called me, panicking, asking, “Where’s my food?!” I told her I had to take it back because I couldn't leave it without contact, but that I’d bring it back.
When I got there, she said, “Oh, I’m so happy. I didn’t think I was going to get my meals today!” And I said, “Of course, I brought them back for you.” She was so relieved.
