Compassion at the Doorstep: How Detra Brings Heart to Chef for Hire
Compassion at the doorstep isn’t just a phrase—it’s the heart of what Chef for Hire delivers every day. In this powerful interview, Detra Glasco, a long-time driver and caregiver, shares how her work goes far beyond food. Her story is one of empathy, connection, and showing up for those who need it most.
Compassion at the Doorstep, One Meal at a Time
Interviewer: What are some of the things you have to consider when caring for an elderly loved one?
Detra Glasco: My granny was really transitioning. Sometimes she’d fight me, but I’d say, “I love you, Granny,” and she’d say it back. I think I was her favorite—she always asked me to get her food. That time shaped how I care for others now.
This job has shown me how much people need that daily check-in. Some clients can’t do much on their own. Often, I’m the only person they see besides a caregiver. Compassion at the doorstep means being that reliable face, that gentle voice.
Interviewer: That human interaction is so vital.
Detra Glasco: It really is. I’m often the first person they see in the morning. Sometimes, they need a hug—and honestly, so do I. It’s emotional, but beautiful.
