Monty G. Degenhardt discussing nutrition for aging in place

Transcript:

Nutrition is extremely important for all of us at every age. It becomes extraordinarily important while we age. For a long time, for my entire life, I've been an athlete and competed in triathlons up until just a few years ago. For me, food and eating was fuel, it was a way to excel and perform.

I feel it's the same when feeding people in at-risk nutrition situations, particularly when a large number of folks in Indiana are at risk. The mandate for seniors here in Indiana is to age in place. They want our population to stay in their homes, and live in their homes, for many reasons.

But, the nutrition is a huge element of that. A lot of people don’t know what good nutrition is, so the meals we provide for them, follow strict government guidelines that will allow them to age in place more effectively.

Why is nutrition crucial for seniors who want to age in place?

Nutrition is the foundation for healthy aging. As people grow older, their bodies require specific nutrients to maintain muscle mass, bone strength, and immune function. Poor nutrition can lead to increased risk of falls, illness, and hospitalizations, making it harder for seniors to remain independent. By focusing on balanced meals, older adults can support their physical and mental well-being, making it possible to stay in their own homes longer.

How do balanced meals support independence in older adults?

Balanced meals provide the energy and nutrients seniors need to stay active and manage chronic conditions. Proper nutrition helps maintain strength, supports cognitive function, and reduces the risk of complications from diseases like diabetes or heart disease. When seniors eat well, they are more likely to manage daily tasks, participate in social activities, and avoid the need for assisted living or frequent medical care.

“Nutrition is not just about food—it’s about empowering seniors to live independently and with dignity. Balanced meals and education are essential tools for aging in place.”

Monty G. Degenhardt

What government programs help seniors access nutritious food?

Programs like Meals on Wheels and the Older Americans Act Nutrition Program offer nutritious meals to seniors who may have difficulty shopping or cooking. These services often follow strict dietary guidelines to ensure recipients get balanced nutrition. In Indiana, local agencies work with providers to deliver meals directly to seniors’ homes, supporting their ability to age in place safely and comfortably.

How can families support better nutrition for aging loved ones?

Families can help by learning about seniors’ nutritional needs, encouraging regular meals, and making healthy foods accessible. Simple steps like meal planning, grocery shopping together, or arranging for meal delivery services can make a big difference. Open conversations about food preferences and challenges can also help address barriers to good nutrition, supporting independence and quality of life for aging loved ones.
