January 31, 2025

As we age, the importance of proper nutrition becomes even more critical—not just for maintaining health but for sustaining independence. In Indiana, the goal is to help seniors remain in their homes and live independently for as long as possible. But what role does diet play in making that happen? In this blog, we dive into an insightful conversation with Monty G. Degenhardt who shares his perspective on how nutrition serves as a foundation for aging in place. Watch the full interview below to learn how balanced meals, proper nutrition education, and government-supported programs are helping seniors thrive at home.

Nutrition is extremely important for all of us at every age. It becomes extraordinarily important while we age. For a long time, for my entire life, I've been an athlete and competed in triathlons up until just a few years ago. For me, food and eating was fuel, it was a way to excel and perform.

I feel it's the same when feeding people in at-risk nutrition situations, particularly when a large number of folks in Indiana are at risk. The mandate for seniors here in Indiana is to age in place. They want our population to stay in their homes, and live in their homes, for many reasons.

But, the nutrition is a huge element of that. A lot of people don’t know what good nutrition is, so the meals we provide for them, follow strict government guidelines that will allow them to age in place more effectively.
